The new striker will have a stronger, beveled tip on it and should last you many thousands of rounds.The flat faces forward in the closed position. The rear end of the guide rod rests on the takedown lever (or pin). This requires the guide rod to protrude at the muzzle by about 3/16" or the difference between flat up and flat forward.
